The MCIA have commented on the reduction of motorcycle fatalities in the DfT Transport Statistics Bulletin: Road Casualties in Great Britain – Main Results 2008. They say:- “493 motorcyclists were killed in 2008, the lowest number since 1996 (when 440 riders were killed) and just 26 more than the 1994-98 average of 467, the official Government baseline for road safety targets. Over the same period motorcycle use has increased over 44 per cent. These results show that mile-for-mile, motorcycling is becoming safer. ” “The reduction of 16 per cent in the number of motorcycle fatalities is a greater reduction than for road users as a whole, where fatalities for all road users have fallen just 14 per cent. The number of riders killed or seriously injured is down 10 percent on 2007, and the total number of motorcycle casualties is 8 per cent lower than in 2007.” So some positive biking news at last, though obviously 493 deaths is still 493 to many, but a 16% reduction should be applauded for all concerned who work tirelessly on improving motorcycle safety. If the idea of strapping a 4 cylinder motor between your legs sounds exciting, then keep your eyes on this all new Honda VFR1200 motorcycle. Reportedly in production and expected to be released in 2010, the Honda VFR1200 plans on revolutionizing the sport bike industry. According to Motorcycle News in the UK the photos below are reportedly of the finished production model. Although the specifications are still under wraps, reportedly the 4 cylinder motorcycle engine will produce around 200 horsepower. To remain friends with green drivers 2 of the 4 cylinders will reportedly operate under normal load. The only time all 4 cylinders will kick in is when you are ready to launch. Sounds thrilling. In all fairness to the lady driving, the way this giant hole blends into the lake behind it almost makes it look like something you could drive through. That said, I think this whole situation is funny as hell. I don’t know if my favorite part is where the bystander is giving the driver directions—I wonder what he’s saying?—as the car is beginning to sink, or the way she literally has to swim while attempting to return to the vehicle. Fortunately, I don’t have to pick just one. Oh, and for the record, I’d change the name of this file if I could. But since StreetFire won’t even let me have scissors on my desk, that’s out of my control.

Now that Cash For Clunkers is officially signed into law , and a solid billion of our taxpayers’ dollars is earmarked for crushing out our recent automotive heritage, rides of the 1985-and-up vintage are more of an endangered species than ever. I’ve seen weirder cars than this Town Car limo end up junked , so don’t think that its uniqueness will save it. I’m sure the small-town limo service that currently owns the car will figure out how to turn it into a cube of steel and a new-car voucher if it doesn’t meet its reserve price. Check out the auction here .

From our work motorcycle parking area. That’s one dedicated motorcyclist *and* unicyclist!

I’m busy chasing the story about Comcast’s decision to pull the ad from the Ad Hoc Committee of Consumer Victims of GM and Chrysler re: the automakers’ attempts to walk away from safety-related claims against their “old” incarnations. I’ve got calls into the left coast lawyers who have first-hand knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the self-imposed censorship.
